About this location

Coal House Fort was built in 1874 and sits next to the Thames in Tilbury Essex. Built to protect London from the threat of a French Invasion, this Victorian Fort offers a maze of tunnels and is the perfect location for a paranormal investigation.

The fort is cleverly positioned on low lying ground at the curve of the river which would have enabled the defence to come from a triangular position between Coal House Fort on the Essex bank and The Cliffe & Shornmead Fort on the Kent Bank.

Coal House Fort served the capital through two World Wars and was instrumental in monitoring the magnetic field of ships as they entered and left the docks. This monitoring would have saved hundreds of lives as the stations would have helped protect the ships from the magnetic mines that wee being deployed in the Thames estuary at this time. This amazing location boasts over 600 years of military involvement so there is no wonder there are countless paranormal reports and ghostly sightings.

As far as Haunted locations go, Coal House Fort offers all manner of paranormal happenings from voices, apparitions and even physical Contact. Staff at the fort have reported strange lights and mists appearing out of nowhere and disappearing as quickly as they came.

This spooky location offers countless tunnels with pitch black uninviting rooms. Ghost sightings ranging from young children to fully uniformed soldiers. Groups have reported hearing footsteps and the sound of dragging and when followed nothing is found, just the empty dark rooms and the feeling of being watched.

This is Southern Ghost Society’s first visit to the Fort and with all these paranormal reports, ghostly apparitions and personal experiences, we are sure to be in for a great night.
