Built in 1229 by Gilbert de Aquila, Michelham Priory has a fascinating history. It changed hands several times, including notable owners such as Thomas Cromwell, Anne of Cleeves, Thomas Culpeper, and Thomas Sackville. In the 20th century, it was restored and used by Canadian troops during WWII. Mrs. R.H. Hotblack later preserved the priory by entrusting it to the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1959.

Michelham Priory is renowned for its ghostly encounters and eerie atmosphere and staff and visitors have reported sightings of numerous spirits, including Thomas Sackville, Known to torment a young girl named Rosie. A Grey Lady has been heartbreakingly seen mourning her drowned child near the moat.

Previous occupants have been seen wandering the priory over the years including a young boy, a maid and various ladies dressed in Tudor clothes. As well as ghostly figures, countless Poltergeist Activities have been reported where investigators have witnessed moving chairs, slamming doors and even personal interaction with visitors reporting feeling a ghostly hand or cold presence as they walk in the darkness.
