Equipment we provide for use on your investigation
Whilst we cannot guarantee finding paranormal activity on every event, Southern Ghost Society has invested in a wide range of equipment specially designed to aid the investigation into paranormal or manifestations of ghosts. Depending on the location we are investigating we use different equipment and techniques.
To enable you to obtain the best paranormal experience on your ghost hunt and to cater for all experiences we have put together team leader boxes which contain a range of equipment for individuals to use whilst investigating with us.
These boxes consist of the following equipment:
- Dowsing Rods
- K11 Meters
- Mel Meter
- EMF Meter
- Audio Recorders
- Spirit Box & Audio Speaker
- Motion Detecting Barrier Beams
- Talking Board / Ouija Boards
- Motion sensing LED balls
- Radio Frequency Detector
The equipment descriptions and photographs further down this page are courtesy of our suppliers and should be used as a general guide.
Other Equipment we use
As well as the team leader boxes we use on our investigations, we also have other equipment and techniques to enhance our chances of capturing evidence.
KII Meter
The KII or K2 Meter is used in all our investigations and is a favourite item for our guests to use when investigating the paranormal.
One of our ghost hunting objectives is to capture paranormal evidence on cameras, night vision camcorders, and sound recording tools. Post event we review the results of our findings and have uncovered many unexplained occurrences and of course found possible explanations for others.
The K2 meter detects electromagnetic fields believed to be generated when a spirit is manifesting itself or maybe present. The K2 meter has 5 brightly coloured led lights ranging from green, yellow orange and red. These lights flash and when electromagnetic energy is present. The more lights illuminated the stronger the magnetic field. When all lights are lit this is called a spike. The K2 can be used to try and communicate with spirits by asking questions and watching for responses on the meter. As the K2 meter detects electronic fields we are wary that some responses may be from nearby mobile phones or electrical equipment so you may be asked to switch off mobile phones when using this equipment.
Mel Meter
The Mel Meter incorporates various different features. The Mel meter is able to record EMF (Electromagnetic fields) and Temperature simultaneously. There are numerous theories that surround the use of EMF meters and Thermometers one such theory being that with EMF (Electromagnetic Field) fluctuations come what are referred to as ‘Cold Spots’.
EMF is the electromagnetic field emitted by natural and man-made objects that conduct and use electricity, including fluorescent lights, fire and smoke detectors. In theory ghosts or spirits also emit EMF that can be detected by the Mel Meter or K2. Prior to the investigation commencing we would check the investigation area for high EMF levels from man-made objects.
Any subsequent increases in EMF levels would then be further investigated as possible paranormal activity.
EMF Meter
The EMF detector is a useful tool to have on investigations as it measures levels of Electromagnetic fields (EMF). With this instrument it is possible to locate and track energy sources and will detect fluctuations in electromagnetic fields.
Before using the EMF as a ghost detecting tool on an investigation it is advisable to walk around the area and take initial readings around energy sources such as light poles or electrical outlets to be sure of the readings you receive while scanning the area during the investigation.
It is a common theory that spirits may be able to disrupt electromagnetic fields in such a way that you can tell one is present by higher than normal readings with this meter.
Audio Recorders
We use digital voice recorders during our investigations and after the event listen to the recording for any unusual sounds or words that we did not hear at the event.
Post event examination of our recording has discovered some interesting EVP activity and our ghost galley contains a few examples of our findings. A number of voice recorders will be available on our investigations for you’re to conduct your own EVP investigations.
Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is intelligible voices or sounds that are found in recording media that have no known physical explanation. Many of the voices / sounds are thought to originate from deceased people.
Spirit Box
The Spirit Box is a great tool for communication with the paranormal. It is believed that, for the most part, ghosts speak at a frequency the human ear cannot hear.
The spirit box or ghost box sweeps the airwaves, going through channel after channel searching for a frequency. It uses the FM and AM radio frequencies to generate white noise or static noise as it scans the radio stations. It is generally believed that spirits can use the energy generated by the white noise to enable them to be heard. When this occurs you will sometimes hear voices or sounds coming through the static in an attempt to communicate. These can be individual words or complete sentences. The spirit box should also be used in conjunction with the digital recorder, to capture the experience for others to see.
Motion Detectors
This device creates an invisible beam barrier. When the beam is broken it triggers the alarm. The motion detectors are located. To lock off an investigation are we use motion detector alarms. The alarm projects and invisible beam which if broken, triggers the alarm. Normally these alarms are place in doorways or corridors.
A useful tool for detecting ghost / paranormal activity that moves. A good tip is to let everyone know who is taking part in your investigation where
Laser Grids
The laser pen emits a grid of green dots useful for detecting shadows or general visual disturbances during an investigation.
If something passes in front of the pen then the disturbance can be clearly seen in the grid.
The size and shape of the dots can be adjusted by turning the lens.
The laser pen can be used in conjunction with a video camera to capture potential evidence.
Dowsing Rods
Dowsing is often described as the art of finding hidden things. Usually, this is achieved with the aid of a dowsing rods or a pendulum. The origins of dowsing go back to the middle ages and were actively used to detect for water and energy. Dowsing rods are a very simple piece of equipment and is used in our investigation to try and communicate with spirits.
The dowsing rods are held in the hands and spirits are invited to try and move the rods to communicate with us. Initially we need to discover what response would be given to a yes and a no answer. Once this is established further information can be obtained by asking questions requiring a yes or a no response.
The dowsing rods can be used by an individual or as a group and we have had some interesting responses using this equipment. Sceptics will often say the person holding the rods are moving them themselves, but it’s not until they encounter the experience themselves that they maybe consider them to be a useful tool in investigating the paranormal.
Talking Board / Ouija Boards
The talking board, is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words "yes", "no, and "goodbye". Southern Ghost Society uses its own custom designed and built talking boards when holding séances. The board uses an upturned wine glass to indicate the letters and numbers of any messages that may come through
Our preference is to use these boards instead of traditional Ouija boards as more people can participate in the talking board experience. Our boards can be comfortably used by 6 people. The board is opened and closed by the team leader and throughout the séance the board and its activity is always respected and controlled. We have experienced some outstanding séances with using these boards.
The traditional Ouija board is also available on request for guest to use and we recommend numbers be restricted to 3 people maximum.
Motion sensing LED balls
An exciting discovery for investigating the paranormal is the “Disco Cat Ball". Originally designed as a toy to keep cats amused as a plaything, it's now found its place in the investigators toolkit.
The disco ball is a motion sensitive ball that has a number of coloured lad’s. The lad’s flash at random when the ball is moved. . We have used them on investigations where we have asked to the ball to be moved and also a favourite when a location is known to be haunted by children.
When used as a trigger object we have found they are best placed in doorways and corridors.
Sony DCR-SR72 Hard Disc Drive Camcorder
We may use the Sony DCR night shot as standard video equipment on our investigations as these cameras give a high quality video recording in no light conditions. This is ideal for capturing paranormal activity on digital video format and the footage can be uploaded to YouTube.
The cameras are easy to use and come complete with a 2.7 inch screen and can record up to 20 hours of action. The battery life is excellent and will last up to 7 hours which normally is enough to see us right through the investigation. We also have spare batteries and memory cards.
SCIRE AeroFlux
The AeroFlux is a device which was developed by datalogging environmental conditions during hundreds of recorded paranormal events witnessed at investigations with Southern Ghost Society.
Consistent patterns of fluctuation were observed in the air pressure data, which routinely showed signs of sudden changes just before and during paranormal events.
When the AeroFlux alerts us that these fluctuations are occuring, we pay close attention to the other equipment and the environment as well as mark it as an point of interest for our footage review.
The AeroFlux is available for purchase through the SCIRE SHOP, if you use the code SGS at the checkout you'll get an exclusive 20% discount
